Background — The Crimson Thread of Kinship is a 12 metre long embroidery representing the unfolding story of Australia. Recently, the embroidery was taken off display in the MuseumÕs galleries due to conservation considerations and a project was initiated to present the object in a digital form via the MuseumÕs website. Developing the interactive has allowed the Museum to provide continued access to this popular object, and at the same time, to add additional content and interpretation to its display. The use of elegant overlay techniques has enabled the Museum to shed light on the design and the production process surrounding the embroidery, while ensuring that the artwork could be viewed in its pure form. The interface design developed for the interactive has been successful in achieving a sense of the physical object itself with a textured-style background, ÒthreadÓ loader bars and a needle and thread mouse pointer. The interactive also incorporates the handwriting of Sharon Peoples, the designer of the physical embroidery, which was a nice way to continue her involvement in the project through to the digital version of the embroidery.

14. Service to Industry award
Winner — Peter Trick
He is known to the industry as an effective manager and a successful high-volume salesman.
Not so well known is the way he laid a solid foundation for his position at the top with a lot of hard yakka at the workface in his early years, including a stint as a copy boy at the Sydney Morning Herald.
His busy working life in Sydney was made up of a lot of study and learning on the job as he mastered hand and machine compositing, copy holding Ð interpreting intricate proof reader shorthand Ð and all manner of menial tasks such as melting dross in a fume-filled room, running an elrod machine and pedal powering a hand platen. He displayed a mechanical aptitude and was given the opportunity to operate a linotype machine eventually becoming the main operator.
Throughout his time as an apprentice, then as a tradesman, he made time for study. As an apprentice, he won an award for book design at the Sydney School of Graphic Art. Once qualified, he continued his studies at night college, graduating in Production Supervision, then continuing with courses in management.
After a move from WA Cooney to Star Printery, his management potential was soon recognised and he was promoted to the production team, then sales. He was Sales Manager for eleven successful years.
For family reasons, he moved to Canberra and settled down with his brood to become a leading light in the industry in the National Capital, managing the small family firm Plaza Print, then being invited to join a much larger organisation, Canberra Publishing, followed by Pirie Printing.
When in 1990, Michael Smith established National Capital Printing, he took on the role of general manager, responsible mainly for sales and he has been a vital part of the growth of that successful company.
